As the Finals begin to arise over the horizon, there are five teams in the four divisions of 2A and 3A with perfect records; Stamford and Hamilton in 2AD1 (they face each other), Gruver in 2AD2, and Malakoff and Edna in 3AD1. Wall (13-1) has the best record in 3AD2.
In 2AD1 Ganado faces the team with the most losses, Joaquin (10-4). Thus, the Indians probably have a good shot at making it to the Final against either Stamford or Hamilton. Gruver and Malakoff are both title defenders.
Malakoff was also perfect (16-0) in 2023 and has not suffered a defeat a since losing to Brock in the 2021 semi-final on December 8, 2022. The Indians have won 30 straight games.
James Driskell has coached for Malakoff since 2009, when the Tigers won their first ever state title.
As is well known among high school football fans, the schools spend a great deal of time (and money) to determine their "mascot" and even more perhaps, in the selection of the proper uniforms to highlight the mascot on the field, among the cheer leaders, dancers. majorettes, and bands.
Interestingly, this year's "Semi-Finals" round in 2A/3A has four teams that are "Tigers" - Bremond, Gunter, Shallowater and Tidehaven. The remaining 12 teams have mascots unique to them, like the Gruver Greyhounds, the Columbus Cardinals: the Shiner Comanches and the Ganado Indians. Stamford players are the Bulldogs; Edna, the Cowboys; Muenster, the Hornets; Woodville, the Eagles and Joaquin, the Rams.
For the 2024 Semi-Finals in 2A and 3A Texas high school football, there are no Bobcats (Refugio), no Polar Bears (Frost) and no Skyrockets (Wellington). No Squaws either. Maybe it's just as well. It's confusing enough as it is.
