How Many Chickens Have You Counted?

Writer: Andy PateAndy Pate

Most of us want our judgments and opinions to be sound and thought as much.

But how can we know, really know that is, ahead of time?

Well, the answer is obvious. We don't really "know," until after the fact of whatever it was that we thought would happen. We may be proven to have been right. On the other hand, and I think, more often, we may be proven to have been wrong.

However, some people have their heads on straight. Their judgments and opinions are more valid, even when made or when proven to be.

An old saying I learned as a boy in Texas, says, "Don't count your chickens before they're hatched?"

I love the saying but have difficulty applying it. What good is it to think about today's challenges, if it's impossible for you to have a measure of accuracy about them? Not much.

Yet, some people ARE smart. They can read the tea leaves and actually be accurate about the future the leaves were telling them would happen.

How? In large measure, my answer to "why count?"

1} eludes me. but I have had an opinion or two that proved to be on the mark. So, I press on in two basic ways:

#1 Elon Musk and Donald Trump are leading us straight to the demise of our democracy.

#2: If we don't stop Musk and Trump soon, we may never again have a chance to do so.

As for the truth of my observations, I am not counting any chickens, not yet. But I will predict that history will confirm them.
