Queen Eleanor and Her Want-a-be King

Eleanor Sparks was a very attractive young woman. She was short in stature but had a lovely profile, a nice figure, and extraordinarily beautiful raven-colored hair.

Eleanor and super-end Bill Anderson began dating regularly when Bill was a junior and Eleanor, a senior. But they broke up shortly after the football season ended.

At the time I was a first-year student in Rice University

Anyway, Eleanor invited me to be her escort for the high school Valentine dance. I was pleased to accept, especially at the opportunity to make good usage of the tuxedo Binky Heard had given me for my high school graduation.

No one was surprised when Eleanor was chosen the Valentine Queen. She looked and acted the part. Then, horror of horrors. She selected Bill Anderson as her King.

Drats! I was well aware of all the trouble I had gone to to be Eleanor's date. And I looked mighty good in the tuxedo, so friends told me.

Someday, I may get over the blow to my ego. But Bill an Eleanor seemed unaffected by my fallen pride.

Not insignificantly, Bill went on to be named a first-team all-stater, then be named outstanding lineman in the Texas high school all-star football game. Too, he had four fine years playing football for the Baylor Bears.

Also, as is pretty well known. Bill (deceased) became an outstanding preacher who for years was an inspirational leader among Southern Baptists.

In hindsight, I figure now that's what happens to a guy who once was chosen King of a dance.
