Speed, Size or Strength - What Makes for a Great Cat (Football Team)?

The fastest human (usually a male) can run three laps around a 440-yard track in right at 3:00 minutes; a real-life bobcat can run a mile (about 4 laps) in roughly the same time.

One not-so-secret trait of the Refugio football team is that it usually has at least a handful of players with good or great speed (two consecutive state track and field titles, 2024 and 2025).

An argument often put forth by high school football coaches is that if you have the speed, you don't need as much size. In nature. with their 30 mph speed the bobcats can escape most other animals that might do them harm.

Another argument often heard among his football coaches is that if you you're strong enough, especially up front (on the line and linebackers, you will win most games.

The Refugio Bobcat weightlifters are not always the best, but they do compete well enough in the weightlifting contests.

Of course, if you have the speed, the size and the overall strength among your players, your high school football team will likely have a great shot at going deep into the playoffs. if not at actually winning the title.

But, in reality, no matter how fast, how big or how strong your team is, attitude supersedes all the others, individually and together. You've got to believe you can win. You've got to love the game. And you must have support, from coaches, school mates and fans who are likeminded; in other words, these collective someones must believe in you.

A case in point. Until a couple of years ago the Ganado Indians just did not appear to be a threat to the Bobcats or anyone else. but that changed when Bryce Ullman became their quarterback and actually believed his team could beat Refugio.

As a result, the Indians have defeated the Bobcats two years in a row.

Can the Bobcats rebound for the 2025 season? The question looms larger with the passing of each day leading up to the week of Friday, August 29th.

Preseason 2A1 Rankings for 2025

The 2025 season does not begin for Texas high school football until another 5 months have passed, but we are anxious and prepared already to make some predictions, one of which is to anticipate which will be the Top 5 teams, among which Refugio is not included for the first time in at least 10 years. (If the Bobcats develop a quarterback and add some new offensive plays, they could well be in the hunt more strongly than it presently looks like they will be.}
