Anahuac, Where Football History Is Being Made

If history had provided the guidelines, the Anahuac High School sports teams would be the Alligators instead of the Panthers; for Anahuac is known to be "the Alligator Capital of Texas"; But such was not the case, and they are the Panthers. Ironically perhaps, The town still sponsors an annual Alligator festival.

The Panthers of 2024 football are a very good team, overseen by a very good coach, Greg Neece, who has coached the Panthers since 2019, moving to Anahuac from Newton where he was offensive coordinator.  Neese also was the head coach for the Kirbyville football team for some six years.

The Panthers (4-1) compete in District 10 of 3AD1, along with Buna, Coldspring-Oakhurst, East Chambers and Orangefield, whom they face at home this Friday, October 4th.  On October 11th, they travel to East Chambers, another very good team, also with but one loss to date.  The Panther loss, 54-51, was to a Houston TAPPS school, Lutheran South

As Texas history buffs know well, Anahuac played a pivotal role in the Texas Revolution, especially with one of its townsmen being William B. Travis, who was killed at the Alamo, and thus, appropriately immortalized.
