Don't Be Fooled by the Won-Lost Records

AS A RULE, it usually follows that the winningest teams are the best teams.  For by and large, the teams that advance deep into the playoffs, especially those that claim a title, they almost always have impressive winning records.

But don’t be fooled, especially at the mid-point of the season.  Several teams have winning records that are not all that good.

Point in question:  The Crystal City Javelinas have yet to lose.  But a closer look at the wins tells us that of the five teams the Javelinas have beaten, not one has a winning record; in fact, the five have played a total of 27 games and won only 5.  Truth is: after acknowledging those losses, Crystal City does not look so good after all. Yet, the Javelinas should still make the playoffs rather easily (top four in each district advance). Also, the district above Crystal City’s (#13) is not so good, so the Javelinas may get as far as the subregional round, if not further.

In addition, teams with but one or two losses could end up looking mighty strong by the time the title games roll around in December.   In 3AD1 alone, four teams have but one loss—Hitchcock, Llano, Winnsboro and Whitesboro—but no one would be too surprised that one or more of these four advances deep into the playoffs.

So, take a hard look at who’s been winning over whom and who’s not been winning but possibly could have; you’ll be glad you did when the title times come around and you are accountable for which teams you predicted would be the ultimate winners.
