The Race to See Which Is the Worst

Writer: Andy PateAndy Pate

Believe it or not, there’s a heated race in Texas High School football that no one really cares about, except maybe stumblebums like Puttbeat.

The race to which we refer is in District 2 of 3AD1. The district has four members:  Brownfield, Denver City, Kermit’ and Lamesa.  To date, the four teams have played 28 games and won just two: that’s right, 2 of 28.  Kermit and Lamesa have surprised everybody; each has won a game to account for the district’s total wins.

Lamesa defeated Dimmitt on Sept 20, 48-34; and not to be outdone, Kermit followed up the next week, on Sept. 27, by winning over Van Horn, 48-3.

Folks, we may be witnessing a historic first:  It’s entirely possible that the four will enter the playoffs without any of the four having a winning record.  And, as the rules go, all four WILL make the playoffs, which means mainly, at this point anyway, the district may be able quickly to add four defeats to its unenviable record.

We apologize hugely if anyone is offended by this report.  But let us quickly point out that all four teams have had winning seasons in previous years.  Thus, they know what it is “to win” and they know, too, how to win.

But let us also be frank.  We, meaning “we football fans”, we may put way too much emphasis on winning.

Puttbeat has a won few and lost a few.  But Puttbeat knows that the most important lessons learned were from when we lost. That being the case, the teams of District 2 3AD1 are learning a hell of a lot in 2024.
